About Ardmore - Area Info

Indian PaintbrushArdmore is nestled at the foot of the Arbuckle Mountains and is surrounded by seven lakes totaling 100,000 acres. Its strategic location on I-35, just 90 miles from either Dallas or Oklahoma City, gives Ardmore a unique market proximity. The advent of the Santa Fe Railroad in 1887 marked the beginning of Ardmore. It was named by Santa Fe Railroad agents after Ardmore, Pennsylvania, which had been named after Ardmore By-the-Sea, Ireland and means "high point" for its lighthouse.

The History of Ardmore shows rich heritage of the town which began in the late 1800's as an agricultural and ranching community in Indian Territory.

Ardmore is uniquely located in the central transportation corridors of North America with interstate access to the east and west coasts and on the main interstate between Mexico and Canada.  In recent years, the term Megapolitain Corridors has defined some of the development paths and Ardmore is situated in the middle of one of the largest ones.  See this USA Today Story for more details.  Our Transportation area will give some of the local transportation specifics.

Lake Murray FishingTourism is a main industry for the southern Oklahoma area which is in the heart of the Lake Country District.  Lake Murray State Park is adjacent to the Ardmore City limits and has about 18,000 acres of water, wildlife and fun.  Over a million people visit the park annually.  Boating, fishing, field trials, nature trails, horseback riding and golf are some popular acitivies.  The rolling native prairie terrain with oak forests are wonderful hunting grounds with great populatioins of whitetail deer, wild turkey and some bobwhite quail.

Ardmore is widely known for the "can do" attitude needed to create and sustain the rich cultural, development and recreational features in the area, and many of the organizations responsible for the community success are lead by some pioneering and visionary people, customary to the city.  See What Others Say About Ardmore.
